A new set of ring and pinion gears should deliver smooth performance. So if you start hearing a whine, hum, growl, or vibration from your drivetrain, your vehicle is trying to tell you something. Answering a few key questions can help narrow down the source of the problem. Ask yourself: If new gears were installed, were they properly broken in? Was the gear set quiet immediately after installation? Did the noise appear suddenly, or gradually get louder over time? Does the noise occur during acceleration, deceleration, or while maintaining speed? Is it present all the time, or only under certain driving conditions? What does the noise actually sound like? Does the noise repeatedly increase and decrease in intensity at a steady speed? At what vehicle speeds does the noise occur? Each of these observations points technicians toward a different potential cause. Was the Gear Set Quiet at First? One of the biggest clues is when the noise first appeared. Quiet at First, Then Suddenly Became Noisy If your gears were quiet after installation but suddenly developed noise, the issue is often related to the installation rather than the gears themselves. A common cause is a bearing or bearing race that wasn't fully seated during assembly. Over time, it can shift under load, changing the gear contact pattern and creating noise. Quiet at First, Then Gradually Became Louder If the noise slowly increased over hundreds or thousands of miles, improper break-in is often the culprit. New ring and pinion gears require a proper break-in procedure to prevent excessive heat buildup during the first several heat cycles. The driving condition where the noise appears is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools. Noise During Acceleration A whine or gear noise that's only present while accelerating typically points to a pinion depth issue. Improper pinion depth changes how the ring and pinion teeth mesh under load, often creating noise when power is applied. Noise During Deceleration If the noise is only heard when letting off the throttle, the problem is commonly related to pinion bearing preload. Incorrect preload can allow the pinion to move slightly during deceleration, changing the gear mesh and producing noise. Noise While Cruising or Maintaining Speed If the noise only occurs under light throttle while maintaining speed, backlash may be the cause. Backlash is the amount of clearance between the ring and pinion gears. If it's outside specification, gear noise often becomes noticeable during steady cruising. Pinion depth, bearing preload, and backlash all change how the ring and pinion mesh under load. What Does the Noise Sound Like? The sound itself can provide valuable clues. Metallic Whine or High-Pitched Noise A whining or metallic gear noise is typically associated with the ring and pinion gear setup. This can result from incorrect gear pattern, improper setup, or changes in gear contact over time. Growling or Groaning A growl or groan often indicates bearing wear or damage. Carrier bearings, pinion bearings, and wheel bearings can all produce similar sounds as they begin to fail. Humming Noise Not every drivetrain noise comes from the differential. A steady humming sound is frequently caused by tire tread patterns or uneven tire wear, especially with aggressive off-road tires. Is the Noise Cyclical? If the noise repeatedly gets louder and quieter while driving at a constant speed, the differential may not be the problem at all. A cyclical vibration or noise is often related to the driveshaft. An imbalance, worn U-joint, or driveline issue can create a repeating vibration that changes in intensity as the shaft rotates. Don't Ignore Vehicle Speed The speed where the noise occurs can also help isolate the source. Different drivetrain components resonate at different speeds. This is especially useful when diagnosing vibrations, since certain parts may only produce noticeable symptoms within a specific speed range. How to Select the Right Gear Ratio for Your Vehicle

One of the most common questions we hear at Yukon Gear & Axle is: "What gear ratio should I run?" The answer depends on two things: What you're starting with What you're trying to achieve Choosing the right gear ratio isn't just about picking a number. It's about understanding your vehicle, how it's been modified, and how you plan to use it. Start with Your Vehicle's Current Setup Before recommending a gear ratio, we need a baseline. Important information includes: Year, make, and model Engine and transmission Axle type Current gear ratio Tire size Factory options This information helps us understand how your vehicle was originally designed to perform and gives us a starting point for making recommendations. What Has Been Modified? Modifications can dramatically affect gear ratio selection. Some common modifications include: Larger tires Engine swaps Transmission swaps Lift kits Heavy accessories like bumpers, armor, and camping gear For example, installing larger tires effectively changes your final drive ratio. While your speedometer may show the same speed, the engine now has to work harder to turn those larger tires. That's why many truck and Jeep owners choose to re-gear after moving to 35-inch, 37-inch, or larger tires. What Is Your Goal? There are many reasons to re-gear a vehicle. Some drivers want: Better acceleration Improved drivability More towing performance Better off-road capability Compensation for larger tires Improved fuel economy A specific performance setup for racing or competition Your goal determines the best gear ratio. For example, a drag racing vehicle, rock crawler, tow rig, and daily driver may all require completely different gear ratios to perform at their best. The Biggest Misconception About Re-gearing Many people assume that after installing larger tires, they simply need to return their engine RPM to factory levels. In reality, what most people want is to restore factory drivability. Modern vehicles are often geared very aggressively from the factory to help manufacturers meet fuel economy requirements. While this works well during testing, it doesn't always translate to the best real-world driving experience. Take a late-model Jeep as an example. Many factory-equipped Jeeps struggle to stay in their highest transmission gear on the highway. The transmission frequently downshifts because the engine isn't operating in its optimal power range. A properly selected gear ratio can allow the engine to run at a slightly higher RPM, where it produces better torque and operates more efficiently. The result? Better throttle response Improved drivability Less gear hunting Better towing performance In many cases, improved real-world fuel economy The goal isn't always lower RPM. The goal is to put the engine in a range where it performs best. Does a Lower Gear Ratio Make Your Axles Weaker? Another common myth is that lower gears are weaker and more likely to break. The truth is that this depends entirely on the axle and gear set design. For example, many popular Jeep gear ratios such as: 4.88 5.13 5.38 all use the same 8-tooth pinion design. Despite the different ratios, they share similar strength characteristics. So where did the myth come from? Decades ago, some extreme gear ratios used in specialty applications required very small pinion heads. In certain cases, the pinion gear became smaller than the shaft supporting it, creating a potential weak point. Examples include: Some older Toyota 5.71 ratios Certain Dana 6.17 and 7.17 ratios used in industrial and mining applications These specialized gear sets helped create the belief that all lower gear ratios are weaker. Top 10 Axle Seal Installation Tips

As with many automotive operations, the complexity of a task is not always representative of its importance. Take axle seal installation… a pretty straightforward affair but get it wrong and your diff is doomed. The seal will leak and ultimately lead to gear failure. To avoid this scenario, we have compiled 10 installation tips that will ensure you do the job right. There are many different types of axle seals. For our purposes we will be referring to the popular dynamic radial seal. These seals typically feature a mild carbon steel shell. In cases where corrosion is a concern the shell can be formed from stainless steel. In most cases, the seal will be outfitted with a garter spring to keep the seal lip tight against the rotating seal surface. Garter springs are made of spring steel wire and in some cases stainless steel and can be locked into place or merely wedged in place so special attention should be paid to ensure proper seating during installation. The inside of the seal is called the lip and it is typically made of some type of rubberized material. The lip can look different from one seal to another with some featuring a stepped design or more than one lip. The shell has a bore seal bumper on its oil side that is made from a softer material to provide a pliable seal. 1 - Right Tool For The Job A seal installation tool that’s designed for the particular seal you’re working with is preferred. Seal installation kits from your local parts store or online tools source are inexpensive, long lasting, and effective. In lieu of that, a socket or bearing race will work in a pinch. The Yukon front inner axle seal installation tool (pictured) works with Dana 30, 44, and 60 front differentials. 2 - Inspect & Detect - Shaft Inspect the shaft where the seal will ride. Light imperfections in the finish can be polished with crocus cloth or emery cloth. If more substantial defects like deep scratches, pitting, or scoring are present you may have to remedy with a new shaft or install a Speedi Sleeve. If the shaft is blemish free, clean it well to remove any residual grit. 3 - Inspect & Detect - Bore Take the same approach with the bore. Look for the usual scratches and pitting but also check for roundness. There should be a chamfered edge around the bore to aid in seal installation. A light chamfer can be added, if needed, using a fine-tooth file. Beyond that, clean the area of grit and excess oil. 4 - Seal The Deal It is wise to use a sealant like an RVT, on the outside diameter of the seal shell to ensure no fluid will be able to seep around the seal once it’s installed. Note that many seals are made with a coating on their outside diameter to assist in this. 5 - Drive It Square Be deliberate and ensure you drive the seal in place squarely. Don’t allow the seal to go in the bore crooked and possibly damage the seal and/or the seal bore. Keep the seal square and install it until it’s flush with the housing or against its stop. It would be wise to note the position of the original seal prior to its removal. 6 - Face Forward Install the seal such that the garter spring is facing inward, toward the fluids you intend to seal in. 7 - Spring Stability In some installations the garter spring can pop off during the process. To avoid this simply apply the backside of the seal with grease (or Vaseline in a pinch) to encourage the spring to stay in place. 8 - Lip Protection When sliding seal over the shaft be sure to protect the lip or leading edge. This can be achieved with special sleeves over splines, using guide plates, or simply using smooth tape… or being very careful. An extension screwed onto the stud of an axle shaft, for example, can provide the control and support needed to complete the installation without having to rest on the shaft. 9 - Lip Lubrication Use grease or gear oil, to lubricate the seal lip and/or the shaft to facilitate easy installation. 10 - Vent Clearance Check that the axle vents are free and clear of any gritty buildup. Clogged vents can lead to excessive housing pressure that may speed the wear of the seal and encourage oil blowby around the seal. Common to all shops is the need for tech support when a technician is at the crossroads of diagnosing troublesome issues or simply figuring out how something fits. We all have those days when everything goes just right, and conversely, we have all had those days when nothing goes as planned. These are the days when the simple three-hour job can take a whole day and set your week on fire. The question is, how do you handle those jobs when your diagnostic of an issue didn’t work? When your install seemed right because you’ve done it this way a thousand times before? It could be the part, it could be the vehicle, it could just be one those days. This is when having a solid backup from your manufacturer really comes in to play. You can buy parts from just about anywhere these days but who can you trust to back you when things aren’t perfect and a little bit of help can go a long way. How to Identify Your Differential & Axle Type The first thing you have to know is how to identify what you’re working on. From cover bolt count, to integrated or drop out and axle types of semi, full float and more. How to Identify and Reduce Positraction Chatter Chatter between clutch packs is common when installing a new positraction. The first thing to consider is if you remembered the friction modifier. This is a common and simple miss that can be a quick solution to any issue. A good gear oil like a GL5 or 80W 90 oil will normally do the trick before having to start over. How to Measure a Semi-float Rear Axle Shaft Setting the backlash on a ring & pinion can be time consuming unless you know the proper steps. Starting with your factory carrier shims, make sure that they are clean and clear of any grit or grease before moving on. With the carrier assembly installed, attach your dial indicator with the plunger at a 90-degree angle from the face of the ring gear. Finding three locations on the gear is the most common fault when rushing through the install. Gear Tooth Contact Patterns Explained Setting up a ring & pinion can sometimes seem daunting and when tricky patterns begin to show up, downright frustrating. But it not as difficult as it seems. Centering between the toe and heel, the top and the bottom can be easily found with small changes. When it’s not working properly, a quick call to isolate your problem can make all the difference There are great manufacturers out there that provide tech support, whether it’s a tuner, exhaust, engine diagnostic tools, carburetors or whatever.
